THE INFLUENCE OF MONASTICISM ON THE REFORMATION OF THE CHURCH
Introduction
Protestants tend not to be interested in monastic spirituality. They think that it belongs to the Roman Catholic Church and has many defects. They are prone to think that reformers such as Luther and Calvin opposed monasticism. However, there are also strong points in some monastic movements from which Protestants can benefit. Some monastic leaders contributed for the pure spirituality, education, economy, and discernment of heresies of the Church.
Therefore, Protestants should understand and take advantage of its spirituality. The purpose of this study is to examine what the influence of monastic movements was for the reformation of the church in the context of church history. The church, which had a privilege in the middle ages, had difficulties for reforming itself. It was monastic movements that strove to reform the church. After that, I will apply the result of the study to current Protestant churches, which are suffering the same problems, which the Roman Church experienced.
As for the method of this study, I will study this theme according to chronological order. This research will refer to primary sources first, and it will also consult secondary sources related to the theme. Regarding the scope of my research, I will examine mainly various great monks who contributed to monasticism and the church. Although monasticism began in the East, this study will deal mainly with monasticism of the West because its Eastern counterpart was not independent, a fact owing to the control of emperors at the time.
Early monasticism: The Eastern monasticism
We cannot know exactly who the first monk or nun was in the history of Christianity because there is no writing of the matter. We can only guess that St. Paul or St. Anthony was one of the first monks due to the writings of Jerome and Athanasius. When there was severe persecution by Decius and Valerian, Paul went to the desert of Egypt to escape the persecution. In contrast, the motive of the monastic life for Anthony was to obey Matthew 19:21-22. He gave all his properties to the poor and began a monastic life. He disciplined himself to overcome temptation.
