ABSTRACT
The Relationship betweem Parenting Attitude and Academic Self-Efficacy Perceived by Elementary School Students
Park Young-Ok, Kim Jung-Hee(Hongik University)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between parenting attitude and academic self efficacy perceived by elementary school students.
The subjects of this study were 301 elementary school students including 132 fifth graders and 169 sixth graders of Kangseo-gu, Seoul.
Furthermore, the questionnaire including the test of parenting attitude designed by Kim, Gi Jeoung(1984) and the scale of academic self-efficacy designed by Kim, Ah Young and Park, In Young(2001) were used as measurement tools.
For the statistical method, Cronbach was calculated in order to prove the reliability of the measurement tools and t-test and Pearson correlation analysis were done for analyzing the relation between variables by using SPSS 15.0(Ver.) program.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
First of all, the results from testing difference in paternal and maternal attitude testing by gender and testing by graders were statistically significant. Above all things, in difference between paternal and maternal attitude, maternal attitude was more receptive than paternal\'s and maternal pressure of accomplishment was perceived higher than paternal\'s. For the difference in gender, girls receptively and autonomously perceived parenting attitude than boys. On the other hand, boys perceived pressure of accomplishment of their parents higher than girls.
Second, there was no significant meaning from testing academic self-efficacy by gender and graders. To speak more precisely, boys perceived only the task of difficulty among sub-factors of academic self-efficacy higher than girls, and there was no difference in graders in terms of all sub-factors of academic self-efficacy.
Lastly, through the correlation analysis between parenting attitude and academic self-efficacy, it was found that receptive and autonomous attitude of parents had the high positive correlation with academic self-efficacy. On the other hand, pressure of accomplishment of parents had a low correlation coefficient. However, it had significant positive and negative correlation with academic self-efficacy. In particular, maternal pressure of accomplishment showed significant positive correlation with self-regulating efficacy, parents\' pressure of accomplishment had the negative correlation with confidence. With these results from this study, it can be concluded that the receptive and autonomous attitude of parents and maternal pressure of accomplishment are efficient for developing positive academic self-efficacy of children, but the pressure of accomplishment of patents might have negative influence on confidence developing of their children.
