The purpose of this study was to analyze a gait pattern and the mechanical efficiency according to ages and walking speed conditions. Data were collected using video camera and gas analyzer. Six males in the twenties age and six males in the sixties-seventies age were tested during slow(3.5km/h), moderate(4.0km/h), fast(4.5km/h) speed conditions on treadmill with 10% inclination for three minutes. The SPSS program was used to verify the statistical significance. The following conclusions were found:
The mean step length was augmented as the speed is increased. But, there was no significant difference in the step length between the twenties age and sixties-seventies age.
In the mean ankle joint angle, all subjects had no significant difference by speed condition at left heel contact(LHC). However, at right toe off(RTO), the twenties age showed larger ankle angle significantly than that of the sixties-seventies age.
There was no statistical significance by speed condition in the mean knee joint angle at LHC. But, at RTO, the knee joint angle was augmented as the speed is increased.
In the mean lean angle of trunk, all subjects had no statistical significance by speed condition at LHC. However, at RTO, the lean angle of trunk was augmented as the speed is increased.
The twenties age showed greater the mechanical efficiency significantly than that of the sixties-seventies age. Also, the mechanical efficiency was augmented as the speed is increased in the both ages.
These results will be used as a basic guideline for the effective gait pattern.
